“Takes courage to not judge people”
In a world where voices often go unheard and barriers seem insurmountable, Sakina’s story is a beacon of hope and inspiration. Sakina started as a reserved college student and now works as a Community Wellness Educator at Safa. Her story is one of courage, compassion, and dedication. As we delve into her experiences and reflections, we shall gain valuable insights into challenging stereotypes, understanding our true selves, and buying a more inclusive world.
Discovering Self
Sakina vividly recalls her curiosity about joining Rubaroo during college in 2018. “The curiosity to learn about gender and interfaith got me going,” she reflects. Initially an introvert, she found herself hesitating to communicate, but the supportive environment of Rubaroo soon empowered her to share her thoughts and forge meaningful connections with others. Agaaz-e-Baatcheet, Rubaroo’s flagship interfaith program, had brought together a diverse cohort that embraced each other’s perspectives and diversity.
“In Rubaroo, I discovered the courage to embrace my true self and challenge societal norms,” Sakina shares. “It was through workshops and discussions that I realized the importance of accepting others without judgment.”
It Takes Courage to Not Judge
One of the most impactful lessons Sakina gleaned from her time with Rubaroo was the value of courage in fostering acceptance and understanding. “It takes courage not to judge people and to embrace diversity. I never had the opportunity to explore other religious places and get to know people before Rubaroo,” she emphasizes. Through engaging activities and conversations, Sakina learned to recognize and challenge stereotypes while embracing the richness of diverse perspectives.
“In Rubaroo, I learned that true strength lies in accepting others for who they are, regardless of differences,” Sakina reflects. “This newfound understanding has profoundly shaped my interactions with others and my approach to life.”
Sakina shares that learning about identities, stereotypes, and different perspectives helped her become a more accepting person. She recalls an activity – Start, Continue, and Stop during the workshop that has helped her.
Growing Through Time
Sakina’s journey with Rubaroo has equipped her with invaluable skills and insights that she now utilizes as a Community Wellness Educator. “Through my work, I aim to empower individuals, especially women and students, to develop essential life skills and thrive in today’s world,” she explains.
“Through Rubaroo, my parents have understood me better and let me be myself. I’ve seen them grow through every conversation I’ve had with them on these things,” Sakina shares. “I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of open-mindedness and empathy in fostering meaningful connections and driving positive change.”
Looking ahead, Sakina is passionate about paying forward the support and guidance she received from Rubaroo. “I envision myself working closely with adolescents, guiding them through the same transformative experiences that shaped my journey,” she reveals. “My advice to young changemakers is to embrace growth opportunities, challenge societal norms, and champion inclusivity and acceptance.”
