Srikanth - Rubaroo

“I’m the first in my community to get this exposure”

Located in Kukatpally stands a haven mistaken for a school or a medical facility – that’s Srikanth’s account of discovering Rubaroo. His journey with Rubaroo began with a simple curiosity, which blossomed into a transformative experience. Here’s a tale of change of an aspiring Telugu teacher pursuing his undergraduate studies who discovers newfound confidence and a world of possibilities.

“I knew Rubaroo through the Trailblazer Community Lab Center in Kukatpally. Initially, I thought it was a school or a medical facility – only to understand that it wasn’t a school but a safe space for young people and adolescents of the community,” Srikanth reminisces.

Participating in daily sessions ranging from arts to dance, music, and spoken English, Srikanth drew deeper into Rubaroo’s activities. “Based on my regular attendance and involvement, I became a core team member of the center and contributed towards managing the center, as well,” he shares, reflecting on the early days at Rubaroo.

First Among His Community

But Srikanth’s journey didn’t stop there. Driven to explore new horizons, he applied for the Emerging Leaders Program 2022, an experience that would profoundly shape his understanding of the world.

“I faced linguistic barriers initially, but the group was so accommodating that they translated things for me, and I could develop new connections. Learning about consent, sexuality, and stereotypes opened new avenues. I challenged myself and overcame my fears by facilitating the adolescent curriculum,”

Hailing from a rural and slum area, Srikanth’s understanding of social issues like gender and interfaith was limited. Nevertheless, his enthusiasm to learn and understand things stood out and brought a sense of empowerment. “I’m the only one from my community to experience something like ELP, and it had a great impact on my life that I didn’t expect and can never forget,” he shares, his words resonating with a profound sense of gratitude.

The Change Within

Indeed, ELP became more than a program for Srikanth – it became a catalyst for personal growth and development. Despite challenges, Srikanth remained steadfast in his convictions to learn and grow.

“It made me confident in speaking out things about gender and sexuality with my friends. Even though my friends still say so many things to me. Ki tu ayise kyun baath kartha rey(arey endira nuvvu pichi pichi vishayaalu cheputunnav) and all. I still stay steady with the confidence that Rubaroo helped me to create in myself. One value which I can never forget in my life is compassion. And I would like to continue to practice that value in my life.”

As Srikanth continues his journey, pursuing his undergraduate studies and aspiring to become a Telugu teacher, he carries with him the lessons learned and the values instilled. “Rubaroo has been that 3rd space for me after my home and school where I really saw myself growing in terms of a good human being. I’m always thankful to Rubaroo and the opportunities that it created for me,” he concludes.
